Milky Way bubbles like cosmic champaign over Bartlett Lake
In Milky Way Rising, Carla Meeske captures the magic moment when the Milky Way rises from the east, bubbling over the mountains like cosmic champagne. It’s only for a few short weeks in February when this phenomenon is perfect.
Artist’s Story
Since high school I have communed with the early people’s spirits around the Verde River, visiting their home sites on rugged hikes, and cooling off in the Verde River. Bartlett is a lake on the Verde, and is just 30 minutes from home. In February and March the Milky Way rises just before dawn. I feel the embrace in my heart as the sky shifts to milky brilliance and the water drinks in the colorful light. The magic of the Milky Way mixing with the water never gets old. This image is a multi row panorama taken with a star tracker for the sky, to keep the stars crisp, married to a foreground series take with extra long exposures to gather the faint ambient light of astronomical twilight into enough illumination to see the foreground clearly.
