Grand Canyon Moonfire, by Carla Meeske, captures the moment when life changed dramatically for the Grand Canyon in summer of 2025. Wildfire smoke from the North Rim fire creates a dreamy haze through the layers of the rocky canyons and transforms the rising moon into a blazing red orb, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The Grand Canyon’s ancient depths, and the lights from intrepid hikers and rafters, remind us that life continues and will prevail. Beauty is indeed above us, below us and all around us, even when fire takes our favorite National Park lodge.
Artist’s Story
The fire that took the North Lodge spread the spirit of the trees as smoke across the canyon. Gut wrenching loss, but also serene beauty. The smoke makes the moon rise bright red, shocking when you see it, like another fire erupting. But no, it is our protector the Moon, telling us that in time all will be in balance again, she will see to it. She controls the tides afterall! We can trust her to manage this cycle of heat and fire, so that the core essence of Earth’s life force remains in tact. Earth, our Mother, ancient and commanding, deep and knowing as her own Grand Canyon.
