Ghost Oak clings to lava, draped in the Milky Way. Sunset Crater, AZ
Within the ancient lava fields of Sunset Crater National Monument, Arizona, Ghost Oak stands as a testament to memory and spirit. Here, Carla Meeske captures the poignant dance of life and remembrance, where a sacred oak’s ghostly silhouette reaches for the brilliant heart of the Milky Way. Though her leaves have ceased their yearly return, this beloved tree’s soul persists, nourished by the volcanic earth.
Artist’s Story
I had been combing the lava flow at Sunset Crater for hour though the night, taking pictures of blooming flowers with the stars. There was just enough wind that all of them were blurry. Frustrated, I was packing it in, when this dying oak called to me. Perfection! I put a soft light on her, and set up for a simple wide angle shot. I really hadn’t noticed how perfect the Milky Way was draping her like a living scarf until I developed the image! Incredible. This year her leaves did not return, but her memory of her vibrant life lives on the lava surrounding her. We are one.
