A perfectly preserved windmill creaks dutifully under Chiricahua’s starry skies, delivering liquid gold and reminding us of the resourcefulness of Arizona’s early mountain settlers. This windmill poured its water into a clever large stone tank, where the animals could easily drink their fill without danger. Carla Meeske captured this beautiful night photograph in a single exposure at Chiricahua National Monument, AZ in the Spring of 2025.
Artist’s Story
I love windmills. I’ve been photographing them as often as I can in the remote areas of Arizona and beyond. This windmill really caught my eye because of it perfect condition and the deep black sky behind it as part of the Chiricahua national monuments Village it stands as a testament to the resourcefulness of the settlers in this incredibly cool mountain range.
