In August of 2024 Carla Meeske was lucky to be in the right place at the right time to capture this stunning image of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS and her 18-million-mile tail. She had traveled over 200 miles that day, with hiking stops, before settling at Capitol Reef, UT just in time to set up for the coming darkness. As promised, the comet appeared, bright enough to see with the naked eye. What a night! Carla captured this with an astro-modified Sony camera and her trusty Tamron 100-500mm lens.

Artist’s Story

Matt and I had a long day when we landed at perfect spot to witness the great comet of 2024. We had started in Blanding, Utah, traveled through Hite and Hanksville, got lost in the Goblin forest, and finally made our way to western most ridge in Capitol Reef to set up for the comet! So fun. The crowd was singing and shouting when Comet T appeared, and I would have been too, but I was focused on capturing the perfect image of this amazing Cosmic Traveler streaking through the sky. I got it! Comet T is my simplest image, and one of my very favorites. What a wonderful night. Enjoy the swooshing streaks of the comet’s tail, as she flies so close we can see her with our naked eye.
