An old tree’s branches form a sacred circle. North Rim Lodge, Grand Canyon
Sacred Circle: A dramatically twisted oak tree against a starry sky, captured at the Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge before the structure and surrounding landscape were consumed by the 2025 fire. The intricate bark and gnarled branches are illuminated against the incredibly dark sky, standing witness to the love the the North Rim Lodge holds in our hearts. The okay sign is a promise – that even through this tree is gone, new oaks will sprout, the Lodge will be rebuilt, and the eternal song of the canyon will continue. The composition is centered on the tree’s unique, circular branch formation—the “Sacred Circle”—which draws the eye upward into the sky.
Artist’s Story
This tree captured my eye at the 2024 Grand Canyon Star Party. It was on the trail under the lodge, just east of the patio. I took many pictures from different angles, using lights to bring out the incredible bark. Its funny how one old tree stump can be the highlight of the night, with the massive canyon just a stone’s throw away!
